Detoxing your body is a myth, but what about detoxing your behaviour?

News / Blog

According to recent medical studies there is no such thing as ‘detoxing’. The principle of ridding your body of toxins it cannot naturally excrete has been debunked by scientists who state that our bodies natural defences do a perfectly good job on their own. Dr Edzard Ernst, professor of complementary medicine at Exeter University states “There is no known way – certainly not through detox treatments – to make something that works perfectly well in a healthy body work better”.

So that’s good news then, however, whilst biologically we may be well managed, what about those bad habits and engrained behaviour that could stop us reaching our full potential in a professional capacity?

Our own personal development and success involves improving our individual awareness and developing our talents and potential.

So do we sometimes sabotage our own potential? At Motiv8 Training we believe that an individuals attitude, behaviour and bad habits could severely damage their potential.

Here are our top five tips to detoxing your behavior:

1. Become aware of negativity
The frequently quoted statement by Henry Ford says – “If you think you can or you think you can’t – You’re Right”, and there is no doubt in the Motiv8 way of thinking that an individual’s positivity will contribute to their success. However, whilst those intrinsic values are vital, external forces also play a part so make sure that you spend more time with positive people and don’t take other peoples’ negativity personally.

2. Brainstorm alternative ways of looking at situations
If you find that you are viewing things from a negative angle and therefore criticising yourself, take a moment to look at alternative views. For example, if you are worried about hitting sales targets, change the thought to something like “I am valued by my customers on the service I give”. It is often useful to write out these positive thoughts to refer back to.

3. Change your attitude
Blaming and complaining aren’t going to change a situation, but changing your attitude will enable you to look at things differently.  Negative thoughts will limit your behaviour, actions, and opportunities. It’s difficult to have a positive life with a negative attitude. Never forget that your attitude is your choice.

4. Concentrate on today
“The past is history, tomorrow’s a mystery, it’s the here and now that matters, it’s a gift, that’s why they call it ‘The Present’.” Too often, we carry around past situations and events, whether work related or personal, that negatively affect our current way of thinking. Don’t let these negative points from the past rob your present happiness! You can decide right now that negative experiences from your past will not predict your future.

5. Focus on solutions
Concentrating on a problem will not help you to get rid of it; in fact it will affect your motivation negatively. Imagine you are back at school, about to take an important exam, as you sit at the desk you start to dwell on how much you hate the subject and how little you have prepared. Suddenly your motivation is affected and the exam suddenly becomes a whole lot harder! Don’t focus on what is wrong. Instead, think about a positive step you can take. By thinking positively about why and how a task has to be performed, we can change our focus from the problem to the solution.
